Overview

A relaxed week of white-sand beaches, shallow lagoons and easy excursions, built for families traveling with children.

A relaxed week of white-sand beaches, shallow lagoons and easy excursions, built for families traveling with children.

Traveling with children changes what a beach holiday needs to deliver — shallow, current-free water where a nervous eight-year-old can actually stand, a kids' club that isn't an afterthought, and excursions built around short attention spans rather than a full day in a vehicle. This seven-day Zanzibar family beach holiday is built around exactly that brief. Three nights at Nungwi and three at Kendwa give you the island's calmest, most swimmable stretch of north coast, with a genuine mix of structured kids' programming, easy half-day excursions and enough unscheduled beach time that grandparents, parents and children all get a holiday that actually suits them, rather than one built around a single age group.

Zanzibar's north coast is the deliberate choice here for a reason most first-time family bookers don't know: unlike much of the island's east coast, Nungwi and Kendwa sit largely outside the extreme tidal swing that can leave a beach stranded a hundred meters from the water at low tide, meaning genuinely swimmable conditions for children most hours of most days. The Mnarani turtle sanctuary and Nungwi's dhow-building yards give kids a hands-on, sensory introduction to marine conservation and local craft that lands better than a museum ever could. June through October brings the calmest seas and coolest temperatures of the year — the window most repeat family clients specifically request.

This itinerary can be shortened, extended, or combined with any other route in our library — including a Zanzibar or Seychelles finale on our multi-country templates, or paired directly with our signature Kenya Migration & Zanzibar Escape for an even more customized journey.

Your 7-day journey, day by day

Day 1

Arrive Zanzibar & Transfer to Nungwi

Landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, your family is met and driven roughly an hour north to Nungwi, at the island's tip, where the drive itself — roadside banana stalls, children waving from village lanes, the first glimpse of turquoise water — often becomes part of the day's entertainment for younger travelers. Check-in at your family-oriented beachfront resort includes an introduction to the kids' club team and its daily schedule, from crab hunts along the tideline to craft sessions using shells collected that morning. With the afternoon still ahead, most families head straight for the shallow, gently sloping lagoon in front of the resort — calm enough for young or nervous swimmers, with a lifeguarded swim zone clearly marked for parents keeping half an eye from the sand.

Day 2

Nungwi Beach Day & Kids' Club

A full day to settle into the resort's rhythm, with the kids' club running morning and afternoon sessions — junior snorkeling lessons in a shallow, enclosed pool area, sandcastle competitions, and a short lesson on local marine life pitched at a child's level — while parents get genuine, guilt-free downtime on the beach or at the pool. Families who prefer to stay together can join a joint beach-games session most resorts run around midday, from relay races to a gentle game of beach volleyball with staff. As the heat eases in late afternoon, the lagoon's shallow water is at its calmest for a final family swim before an early dinner, most young children ready for bed not long after the sun drops.

Day 3

Mnarani Turtle Pond & Dhow-Building Village Walk

Today's excursion is deliberately short and hands-on, built for children's attention spans rather than adult itineraries. A visit to the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond lets kids get in the shallow tidal enclosure themselves, under a keeper's supervision, to feed rescued green and hawksbill turtles recovering from injuries — genuinely one of the most memorable stops of the week for most families. From there, a short guided walk through Nungwi's working dhow-building yards shows shipwrights shaping traditional wooden boats entirely by hand, with children invited to touch off-cuts of the timber and see finished dhows ready for their first launch. Both stops together run under three hours, leaving the rest of the day free for the beach.

Day 4

Transfer to Kendwa Beach

A short, easy transfer — around twenty minutes along the coast road — carries your family to Kendwa, a quieter stretch of the same north-coast lagoon system with an even gentler shelving beach, popular locally for its long, gradual sunset views uninterrupted by headlands. Check-in at your Kendwa resort includes a fresh kids' club orientation, and the afternoon is left open for a first swim and a look around the new stretch of sand. Many families find Kendwa's slightly slower pace than Nungwi's a natural way to close out the trip, with fewer day-trip boats passing offshore and a beach that empties out noticeably by late afternoon.

Day 5

Easy Snorkeling & Sandbar Excursion

A short boat trip out to a shallow reef and sandbank just offshore introduces even first-time snorkelers, including confident children over about eight, to Zanzibar's underwater world in genuinely calm, shallow conditions. Life jackets and a crew member in the water throughout make this one of the more relaxed family snorkeling setups available on the island, with sightings of parrotfish, sergeant majors and the occasional small ray likely in the shallows. The boat anchors at a exposed sandbank for a picnic lunch, sand and water on all sides and nothing else in view — a genuine highlight for most children on the trip. Families preferring to stay on dry land can opt for a glass-bottom boat version of the same excursion instead.

Day 6

Sunset Dhow Cruise

The day is left open at your own pace — a last morning of kids' club activities, a final swim, or simply packing in stages between beach sessions. In the early evening, before younger children's bedtimes, a family-friendly dhow cruise sails out along the Kendwa coastline as the sun drops, timed deliberately earlier than the adult sunset cruise elsewhere on the island. Dolphins are occasionally spotted from the boat in the calmer evening water, though never guaranteed, and soft drinks and snacks are served on board for children and adults alike. A relaxed farewell dinner back at the resort, often with a small beach bonfire for younger guests, closes out the week.

Day 7

Departure

A final unhurried morning — one last swim before the bags are packed, or a slow breakfast watching the tide — precedes your private transfer to the airport for your onward or homeward flight. Our local team stays available throughout this final transfer, and we're always glad to hear how the week worked for your family once you're home; Zanzibar's north coast is consistently one of our most-repeated family bookings, often returning within two or three years.
