Zanzibar: the Indian Ocean's barefoot-luxury coast

Centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trade layered into Stone Town's coral-stone lanes, red colobus monkeys found nowhere else on Earth, and a coastline built for the deliberate, unstructured close to any safari.

Zanzibar rewards a day away from the sand.

Most visitors see Zanzibar purely as a beach finale — and it is one of the best in the world for that. But the island's spice-trade history, its one national park, and its offshore reefs reward at least a day or two of exploring beyond the resort, guided by people who grew up on this island.

Every Zanzibar stay connects directly to our Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Seychelles itineraries — a 1–2 hour flight from most mainland safari circuits.

Zanzibar's national parks

01

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park

Zanzibar's only national park — home to the endangered, endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey.

A mix of groundwater forest, mangrove boardwalk and swamp, Jozani protects the last significant population of the Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on Earth, alongside Sykes' monkeys and a raised mangrove boardwalk through the swamp forest.

Local expert tip Go early morning before the tour-bus groups arrive — the red colobus troops are most active and least habituated to crowds in the first hour after the park opens.
Best time to visit: Year-round; June–October dry season is most comfortable for the forest walk.

Mnemba Atoll Conservation Area

A private marine conservation area off Zanzibar's northeast tip — some of the best reef diving in the region.

A small, privately managed coral island surrounded by a protected reef system, Mnemba's waters are widely regarded as Zanzibar's best diving and snorkeling, with resident pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins in the surrounding channel.

Local expert tip Book the earliest boat slot — visibility and marine life activity both drop off noticeably by mid-morning once the day-trip boats from Nungwi and Kendwa arrive in numbers.
Best time to visit: June–October and December–February for calmest seas and best underwater visibility.

“The red colobus monkeys at Jozani were completely unexpected — we'd only planned Zanzibar as a beach stop, and it ended up being a highlight.”

Zanzibar FAQs

Planning your Zanzibar trip

What is the only national park in Zanzibar?

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, home to the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey found nowhere else on Earth, alongside mangrove boardwalks and groundwater forest.

When is the best time to visit Zanzibar's beaches?

June to October is the driest, most reliably sunny window; December to February is also good but warmer and more humid. March to May is the long rainy season, best avoided for a pure beach stay.

How do I get to Zanzibar from a mainland safari?

A short 1–2 hour domestic flight connects Zanzibar to Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi or the northern Serengeti airstrips — we coordinate these connections directly so there's no layover.
