detailed Itinerary

Touch down in the foothill town of Kasese, where the jagged silhouette of the Rwenzori range greets you. After meeting your guides and porters, you’ll have a final gear check and briefing. The evening is spent in a lodge overlooking the rolling plains that fade into the Mountains of the Moon.

The trek begins with a steady ascent through lush rainforest alive with colobus monkeys, turacos, and chameleons. The trail climbs steadily until you reach Sine Camp, perched near cascading waterfalls and surrounded by giant trees dripping with moss. The sound of rushing water will be your lullaby tonight.

Today you’ll hike through bamboo forests before entering the stunning heather zone, where giant lobelias and everlasting flowers bloom in surreal beauty. The air grows cooler, and the trail winds steeply until Mutinda Camp appears in the clouds. Optional evening hike to Mutinda Lookout (3,975m) offers sweeping views.

The route crosses bogs and high ridges, entering the unique Afro-alpine zone. Towering groundsels and spiky lobelias dominate the landscape, while emerald valleys lie below. Bugata Camp sits beside a glacial lake, surrounded by ridges that reflect fiery sunsets.

An alpine traverse across open ridges gives dramatic views of Mt. Stanley, Mt. Baker, and Mt. Speke. The trail dips and rises through rocky valleys and past several lakes before reaching Hunwick’s Camp, tucked into a wild, windswept basin.

Today’s climb is shorter but steeper, as you move into the high alpine zone where glaciers dominate the landscape. Margherita Camp rests at the base of Mt. Stanley, offering a front-row seat for tomorrow’s summit push.

A pre-dawn start leads you across glaciers, icy rock faces, and rope-assisted climbs. With guides securing the way, you ascend steadily to Margherita Peak—the third highest in Africa. The view from the top reveals endless ranges, the Congo Basin, and vast African skies. After celebrating, you descend back to Hunwick’s Camp for a well-earned rest.

The descent begins through enchanting valleys rich with wildflowers, moss-covered rocks, and crystal-clear streams. Kiharo Camp is set in a sheltered gorge surrounded by lush vegetation and bird calls, a peaceful contrast to the harsh alpine world above.

A final walk through rainforest leads you back to civilization. The trail echoes with the sounds of tropical birds and rushing rivers until you arrive at the trailhead. After warm farewells to your trekking team, you return to Kasese with a story few adventurers can claim—the conquest of the wild, untamed Kilembe Trail.
