Formed by the erosive and faulting action of the Kyambura River, it is characterized by dense tropical rainforest contrasting sharply with the open grasslands above.

Besides chimpanzees, the gorge supports diverse wildlife, including red-tailed and black-and-white colobus monkeys, hippos, and numerous bird species such as the African finfoot and crowned eagle. The rich vegetation and enclosed microclimate create a lush, green corridor that serves as a vital ecological refuge within the larger savanna ecosystem of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
