Overview

A migration-led ten-day route through Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania: a gorilla trek at Volcanoes, three nights in the Mara and three in the Serengeti, with every transfer by air.

A 10 day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari gives you one mountain gorilla trek, three nights in the Maasai Mara and three in the Serengeti, with every transfer flown so that none of the ten days is lost to a road. It is built around the Great Migration, and works best between July and October, when the herds are in the Mara and the northern Serengeti.

OverviewA 10 Day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania Safari Led by the Migration

This route is for guests who want the migration and the gorillas but do not want to give up two weeks. It starts in Rwanda with one gorilla trek, moves to Kenya for three nights in the Maasai Mara, and ends in Tanzania with three nights in the Serengeti. The three countries are joined by flights, with one short border transfer on the road between two airstrips, so you spend your time in the wildlife areas.

The order matters for your visa. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda and Kenya but not Tanzania, so the route begins in Rwanda and finishes in Tanzania, which keeps your paperwork simple. The entry section below gives the detail.

This is the herd-led version of the route. If you want a second gorilla trek in Uganda as well, see the 14 day version across four countries. If you can only spare eight days and would rather stay in Kenya, our 8 day version without Tanzania keeps the gorillas and the Mara.

10 Day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania Safari: Gorillas, the Mara and the Serengeti

Day by DayDay by Day on the 10 Day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania Safari

Ten days, three countries and five flights. This is how each day runs.

1Day

Arrive in Kigali and Drive to Volcanoes National Park

Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport and drives you north, about 2.5 hours (105 km), through the terraced hills to the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. You check in to your lodge in the afternoon. The first day of this 10 day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari is a rest day before tomorrow's trek.

2Day

Gorilla Trek at Volcanoes National Park

An early breakfast, then the briefing at the Kinigi headquarters at about 07:00, where you are assigned to a habituated gorilla family. The trek takes from half an hour to several hours, and when you find the family you stay with them for one hour. You return to the lodge in the afternoon, and tonight is an early night.

3Day

Kigali, Then Fly to Nairobi

You leave Volcanoes after breakfast and drive to Kigali, reaching the airport by late morning, then fly to Nairobi in the afternoon (about 1h50). A boutique hotel in the Karen suburb is your base for the night. A night in Nairobi is deliberate: Wilson Airport is more than an hour from the main airport, and a same-day connection to the Mara is not reliable after a drive from the volcanoes.

4Day

Fly to the Maasai Mara

A morning flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes to the Mara. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and you go straight to camp for lunch, then take an afternoon game drive. Lions, elephants and Mara buffalo are among the animals you may see on the first drive.

5Day

Full Day in the Maasai Mara

A full day of game drives with an early start, breakfast in the bush and a second drive in the late afternoon. The Mara holds lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and buffalo, and your guide chooses where to go each morning from the latest sightings.

6Day

Mara River Day

Today we take you to the Mara River. From roughly August to October the herds gather on the banks and cross. We position the vehicle early and wait, because a crossing starts and stops on the herd's timing. If it does not happen today, you have still watched the herds, hippos and crocodiles at close quarters.

7Day

Mara to the Serengeti by Air, Road and Air

You leave the Mara by air at about 08:05, change to a road transfer across the Kenya and Tanzania border at Isebania and Sirari, and board a second flight that lands in the Serengeti around midday to early afternoon, depending on the airstrip. In the migration season we use a northern strip. Your guide meets you and you go on an afternoon game drive.

8Day

Northern Serengeti: Full Day

A full day in the northern Serengeti, where from July to October the herds are often near the Mara River. In other months we base you in the central Serengeti instead, which holds big cats and resident game all year. Your guide plans the day around the latest sightings.

9Day

Northern Serengeti: Second Day

A second day lets you choose again: return to a river or a kill you saw yesterday, drive towards the plains for the herds, or spend more time with a particular family of lions or cheetahs. Three nights here means two clear days of game drives.

10Day

Fly to Kilimanjaro and Depart

After a final morning game drive, you take an afternoon flight from the Serengeti to Kilimanjaro, arriving in the early evening, in time for a late-evening international departure. We advise booking a departure after about 21:00. If you would like a night in Arusha before your flight, we can add it.

Gorilla TrekkingOne Gorilla Trek at Volcanoes National Park

One trek is the core of the Rwanda leg of a 10 day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari, and for most guests it is enough. You spend two nights near Volcanoes National Park, so that your arrival day is a rest day and your second day is the trek. Permits are limited to one family visit per day for a group of eight, and we secure yours before we book anything else.

As checked on 10 October 2026, a Rwanda gorilla permit is USD 1,500 per person, and the minimum age is 15. You report to the Kinigi headquarters at about 07:00, trek for anything from half an hour to several hours, and spend one hour with the family. A shorter golden monkey trek can sometimes be added on the arrival day, subject to a separate permit.

If gorillas are your priority and you want more than one trek, our Rwanda safari packages spend all their days in Rwanda.

The MigrationThe Great Migration and the Mara River Crossing

The Great Migration is a circuit rather than an event. From roughly August to October the herds are in the Maasai Mara and the northern Serengeti, and the Mara River crossings usually peak in August and September. Crossings happen when the herds decide, not to a schedule, and they can gather at the bank for days before they cross. We never promise a crossing, but the 10 days Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari puts three nights in each of the two places where they happen.

That is why we use the northern Serengeti in this season. Our guides to the timing of the Mara River crossings and the Great Migration in Kenya explain the pattern, and how the Great Migration works covers the whole year.

Mara to SerengetiFrom the Mara to the Northern Serengeti

The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are the same ecosystem on either side of a border, and a direct link by air, road and air joins them: a flight from the Mara to Migori in Kenya, a short road transfer across the border at Isebania and Sirari, and a second flight to the Serengeti. In AirKenya's 2026 timetable it leaves the Mara at about 08:05 and reaches the southern Serengeti at about 12:30, and it also serves the northern airstrips at Kogatende and Lobo, with times that vary by day.

For this 10 day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania safari the link runs daily to 31 December 2026 except 1 April to 20 May, and it needs a minimum of two passengers, rising to four from 1 November to 15 December. Bags are limited to 15 kg in a soft bag. If the link is not running on your dates, the fallback is a flight via Nairobi and Arusha, which adds a night. Our safari flight logistics guide gives the full detail, and our Serengeti guide describes the regions of the park.

When to GoBest Time for a 10 Day Rwanda Kenya Tanzania Safari

July to October is the best time, because the herds are in the Mara and the north. In July the herds are often near the Grumeti River in the west and the first crossings begin. August and September are the peak for the Mara River. In October the herds begin to drift south, and the northern Serengeti remains good until about November.

Outside those months we still run the route, with changes. We use the central Serengeti, where big cats and resident game are present in every month, and the Mara, which is always worth three nights. The two things to watch are the Mara to Serengeti link, which does not operate between 1 April and 20 May in the 2026 timetable, and the heavy rains of March to May. Read our guides to the best time to visit Kenya and Tanzania before you choose your dates.

Entry RulesVisas, Permits and Health Checks for Three Countries

Checked 10 October 2026
  • Rwanda and Kenya: the East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) covers both and must be applied for through the first country you enter, which here is Rwanda. Kenya does not require the separate eTA from holders of the East Africa Tourist Visa.
  • Tanzania: the East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover it, so you need a separate Tanzanian visa (an eVisa is available). Mandatory visitor insurance for the Tanzanian mainland began on 1 October 2026; one source puts the cost at USD 44, so confirm the figure on the official portal.
  • Health: Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from countries on its endemic list, which includes Kenya, so carry your card. Read our vaccination guide and our current health alerts.

We keep dated changes on our entry alerts list, and the rules for each country are in our visa requirements guide. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is advised; see our insurance guide. These are checked facts, not promises, so please confirm on the official portals.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania in 10 days?
Yes, with five flights and one border transfer by road between two airstrips. The route works because every long leg is flown, so ten days is enough for one gorilla trek, three Mara nights and three Serengeti nights.
How do you get from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti?
By air, road and air: a flight from the Mara to Migori in Kenya, a bus transfer across the border at Isebania and Sirari, and a flight from Tarime into the Serengeti. In AirKenya's 2026 timetable it leaves the Mara at about 08:05 and reaches the southern Serengeti at about 12:30.
Is there a direct road or flight from the Mara to the Serengeti?
No scheduled direct flight. The road via Isebania takes about 10 to 14 hours, which is why we use the air, road and air link instead.
When does the Mara to Serengeti link not run?
Not between 1 April and 20 May in the 2026 timetable. It needs a minimum of two passengers, and four from 1 November to 15 December. We confirm the timetable for your dates and quote a fallback if needed.
Does the East Africa Tourist Visa cover Tanzania?
No. It covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only. For this route you need the East Africa Tourist Visa for Rwanda and Kenya, entering Rwanda first, plus a separate Tanzanian visa.
Which visas do I need for Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania?
The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) for Rwanda and Kenya, and a Tanzanian eVisa (USD 50 for most nationalities). Tanzania also introduced mandatory visitor insurance on 1 October 2026. Confirm each on the official portals.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Tanzania after Kenya?
Tanzania asks for a certificate from travellers arriving from countries on its endemic list, which includes Kenya. We advise carrying your card. Our vaccination guide goes through the detail.
When is the Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania?
Roughly July in the western and northern Serengeti, August and September at the Mara River, and tapering from mid-October as the herds move south. Timing varies from year to year.
Can I see a river crossing in 10 days?
Only between July and October, and never with certainty. The herds can gather at the bank for days before crossing. Three nights each in the Mara and the Serengeti give you the best chance.
Which airport do I fly home from?
Kilimanjaro. Afternoon flights from the Serengeti arrive at about 18:20, so we advise an evening international departure.
How much luggage can I take on the bush flights?
About 15 kg in a soft bag, including hand luggage. Some airlines sell an extra seat if you carry heavy camera gear.
Why not drive from the Serengeti to Kilimanjaro?
Arusha to the central Serengeti is about 7 to 7.5 hours by road each way, and the northern Serengeti is further. A flight saves a day.
How long is the flight from Kigali to Nairobi?
About 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes, on RwandAir and Kenya Airways. On this route you take an afternoon flight on day 3.
How much is a gorilla permit and what is the age limit?
A Rwanda permit is USD 1,500 per person, as checked on 10 October 2026, and the minimum age is 15.
