A Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari is the most complete way to see East Africa in one journey: mountain gorillas in Uganda's Bwindi forest, the Maasai Mara and its Mara River in Kenya, then the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. Done in the right order and with enough days, it is a single, flowing trip. Done in ten days it becomes a string of airports. This guide shows the route we recommend, how many days it needs, when to go, how you move between the three countries, and what to check before you book.

The short answer
Yes, a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari is realistic, but only with 14 days at the very least and 16 to 18 days for a relaxed pace. Start in Uganda for the gorillas while you are fresh, fly to Kenya for the Maasai Mara, cross into Tanzania for the Serengeti, and finish in Arusha or on Zanzibar. Go between late June and early October for dry trekking and the best chance of Mara River crossings.
Why a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari works as one trip
The three countries give you three different kinds of wildlife encounter, and they do not repeat each other. Uganda offers the forest: mountain gorillas, and chimpanzees in Kibale if you add it. Kenya offers the Maasai Mara, famous for lions, leopards, cheetahs and, from July, the Mara River crossings. Tanzania offers scale: the Serengeti's open plains, the herds that follow the rains across them, and the Ngorongoro Crater for those who add it.
The wildlife also links up. The Serengeti and the Maasai Mara are one continuous ecosystem split by a border, which is why the herds of roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million wildebeest, with several hundred thousand zebra, move between them through the year. Seeing the Mara and then the Serengeti on one trip lets you follow that story from the Kenyan side to the Tanzanian side. For how the movement works, read our guide to the Great Migration.
The cost of combining is time and logistics, not money alone. Every border adds an entry process, a change of vehicle or guide, and often an airport. That is why this page is about how to join the countries well, and why we recommend a sensible number of days rather than the shortest possible trip.
The best route order for a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari
We recommend Uganda first, then Kenya, then Tanzania, with Zanzibar or Arusha last. There are four reasons for that order.
The gorilla trek is the most physical day. A trek in Bwindi can last from under an hour to several hours over steep, muddy ground, so it is best done at the start of the trip, when you are rested and your luggage is still light. Entebbe is a convenient first airport, with direct flights to Nairobi taking about one hour 30 minutes. Kenya then Tanzania follows the migration in the usual season: the herds reach the Mara from July and cross back to the northern Serengeti through September and October. Finally, the beach comes last, so a few days of rest on Zanzibar follow the early starts instead of interrupting them.
The reverse order works too, and some guests prefer to begin in Tanzania. The usual reason is an international flight into Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam. If you choose it, keep Uganda for the end only if you are happy to trek gorillas after two weeks of long drives. Our planners will test both directions against your dates and flights.
Kenya's Maasai Mara is the middle stop, and the best place on the route for lions and big cats.
How many days a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari needs
Is a three-country safari realistic? Yes, as long as you count transit days honestly. Moving from Bwindi to the Maasai Mara is a full day even by air: a road transfer or short flight to Entebbe, a flight to Nairobi, time at the airport and a transfer between Nairobi's two airports, then a flight to the Mara. Moving from the Mara to the Serengeti is another long day.
Trip length
What it realistically gives you
Our view
12–13 days
One gorilla trek, three nights in the Mara, three nights in the Serengeti, no beach. Several flights, little slack.
Possible for fit, experienced travellers who accept a fast pace.
14–15 days
Two nights in Bwindi, three in the Mara, three or four in the Serengeti, a short beach or Arusha finish.
The minimum we are happy to recommend for a first safari.
16–18 days
An extra night at each stop, a second wildlife day in Uganda or the Ngorongoro Crater, and four or five nights on Zanzibar.
The best balance of wildlife and rest for most guests.
19–21 days
Room for chimpanzees in Kibale, a longer migration stay, and a full beach week.
Right for photographers and milestone trips.
These ranges are our planning judgement, based on the transit times shown in this guide and in our flight logistics guide.
Whatever length you choose, protect three things: at least three nights in the Serengeti if you want a chance at river crossings, at least two nights in Bwindi so a rained-off trek day is not fatal, and a night in a comfortable bed between long travel days. If you only have ten days, we would split the trip and see two countries well. See combining Kenya and Tanzania or combining Uganda and Kenya.
A 16-day Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari, day by day
This sample shows the rhythm of a well-paced route. It is an outline, not a fixed itinerary. Lodges, flight times and transfers change with season and availability, and we confirm them in your quote.
Days
Where
What happens
1
Entebbe
Arrival, transfer to a lakeside lodge, rest and briefing.
2–4
Bwindi, Uganda
Light aircraft to the Bwindi airstrip, a gorilla trek on day 3 with one hour in the family's company, and a recovery day with a community or forest walk.
5
Bwindi to Nairobi
Light aircraft to Entebbe, an international flight to Nairobi and an overnight near Wilson Airport, so the early Mara flight is not a rush.
6–8
Maasai Mara, Kenya
Three nights, with full-day game drives, a bush breakfast and, in season, time at the Mara River.
9
Mara to Serengeti
Fly to the border airstrip, clear Kenya, cross to Tanzania and fly on to the Serengeti. A long but scenic day.
10–12
Northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Four nights in total near Kogatende and the river, with a full day beside the crossing points.
13
Serengeti to Zanzibar
A morning game drive, then a scheduled flight to Zanzibar.
14–15
Zanzibar
Rest, spa time or a Stone Town walk.
16
Departure
Transfer to Zanzibar airport.
A sixteen-day plan like this one has seven flights between your arrival and your departure, six of them in light aircraft. That is exactly why baggage matters. Most bush airlines limit you to 15 kg in a soft bag, which we explain in our guide to safari flight logistics.
The Serengeti, where the herds spend most of the year following the rains.
The best time for a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari
For the full route, late June to early October is the strongest window. It is the dry season in Bwindi, which makes trails less slippery, and it is also the time the herds are in the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. Gorillas can be trekked all year, so the gorilla leg is the most flexible part of the trip. The migration is the most seasonal.
Months
Bwindi, Uganda
Mara and Serengeti
For this route
Jan–Feb
Dry
Herds in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, with calving peaking in February
A different route: Ndutu replaces the Mara River
Mar–May
Wet
Long rains, with April the wettest month in Tanzania
Quietest and greenest, with some lodges closed
Jun
Dry
Herds in the Western Corridor and Grumeti
Good, with the Mara River still ahead
Jul–Oct
Dry (October turns wetter)
Northern Serengeti and Mara; August and September are the peak river-crossing months
The best window for the full route
Nov–Dec
Wet in November, drier from December
Short rains, and the herds heading south
Possible, with less certainty
Rains vary from year to year, and crossings vary by weeks.
No operator can guarantee a river crossing. Crossings depend on the herds and the weather, and they can happen in minutes after hours of waiting. We advise at least three, ideally four, nights at a crossing camp. For timing in detail, read our Mara River crossing guide.
How you move between the three countries
You have three kinds of movement on a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari, and it helps to separate them.
International flights between capitals. Entebbe to Nairobi is a direct flight of about one hour 30 minutes, served by several airlines on most days. Nairobi to Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar is also direct and takes roughly an hour to an hour and 40 minutes. These are ordinary airline flights with the usual baggage allowance.
Bush flights to parks. From Entebbe, scheduled light aircraft reach the Bwindi area in about an hour and ten minutes, against 8 to 10 hours by road. From Nairobi's Wilson Airport, light aircraft reach the Maasai Mara in about an hour. These small planes have a 15 kg soft-bag limit, usually including hand luggage.
The Mara to Serengeti link. There is no scheduled direct flight. The common route in high season is a flight from the Mara to a border airstrip at Migori, immigration, a road transfer across the border, and a second flight from Tarime into the Serengeti. This link runs in the high seasons only (July to October, and mid-December to March), with a minimum number of passengers. Outside those dates the fallback is a flight via Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. The road crossing at Isebania takes 8 to 10 hours or more over rough roads, and we advise against it.
Planning tip: never connect a bush flight to an international flight on the same day without a long buffer. Delays at Nairobi's JKIA are common, and allow 45 to 75 minutes there for immigration and baggage before you reach the transfer to Wilson Airport.
All schedules in this section were checked in October 2026 and change often, so we reconfirm every flight in your quote. The full timetable, baggage rules and overland times are in our safari flight logistics guide, and the question of flying or driving is covered in fly-in or road safari.
Visas and entry rules for the Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari route
Each country runs its own entry system, and this is where many first-time planners trip up.
Country
What most visitors need
Published fee
Uganda
An online tourist e-visa before you travel. Uganda does not issue visas on arrival.
USD 50, single entry
Kenya
An online electronic travel authorisation (eTA), unless covered by an East Africa Tourist Visa.
USD 30
Tanzania
An online e-visa, or a visa on arrival for eligible nationalities. US passport holders are directed to the multiple-entry visa.
USD 50 single entry; USD 100 multiple entry
Always confirm on the official portal before paying, and avoid look-alike sites.
The East Africa Tourist Visa costs USD 100 and covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for 90 days. It does not cover Tanzania, and entering Tanzania ends it. On this route you would still need a Tanzanian visa either way, so compare the two options: three separate permissions come to USD 130 on the published fees, while the East Africa Tourist Visa plus a Tanzanian visa comes to USD 150. The shared visa is more useful on routes that revisit Uganda, Kenya or Rwanda.
Three more points matter on this route. Tanzania introduced mandatory visitor travel insurance for the mainland on 1 October 2026, at USD 44 per adult, bought once for your first Tanzanian entry. Carry your yellow fever certificate, because Kenya and Tanzania may ask for it when you arrive from a country on the risk list, whatever Uganda's own rule says. And allow at least two blank passport pages per country, since Kenya's guidance varies between one and two.
Rules in this area are changing quickly in 2026. Our dated table of entry rules and health alerts, checked 10 October 2026, lives in the multi-country safari guide, and the overview of all five destinations is in our visa requirements guide.
What each country adds to a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari
Uganda: gorillas and the forest
Uganda is where the route begins. A gorilla permit is for one hour with a habituated family, in a group of no more than eight, from the minimum age of 15. The published permit price for foreign non-residents is USD 800 in 2026, with a lower USD 600 permit announced for April, May and November on fixed dates. Our permit cost comparison explains how that compares with Rwanda's USD 1,500 permit. If you have more time, add chimpanzees in Kibale or the Nile at Murchison Falls. See our Uganda destination guide.
Bwindi's steep, forested hills. Plan at least two nights so one rough day does not cost you the trek.
Kenya: the Maasai Mara and big cats
Kenya is the stage for lions, cheetahs, leopards and the Mara River. The reserve and the private conservancies around it offer different experiences: the reserve is the classic, and the conservancies usually allow fewer vehicles and, with the right camp, night drives and walks. See our Kenya destination guide and the Maasai Mara guide. If you have an extra night, Amboseli adds elephants beneath Kilimanjaro.
Tanzania: the Serengeti and the crater
Tanzania adds space. The Serengeti is vast, and the northern Serengeti near Kogatende is where most river-crossing safaris end up on the Tanzanian side. If you want a day at the Ngorongoro Crater on the way to Arusha, plan for it early, because it adds a day. See the Serengeti National Park guide and our Tanzania destination guide.
The beach finish
Many guests end a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari with four or five nights on Zanzibar. Direct flights run from Nairobi and Kilimanjaro, and scheduled flights leave the Serengeti, so the beach can also be the exit point. Our guide to adding Zanzibar covers the choice of coast and the best months, and our Zanzibar page has the lodges.
Zanzibar is the usual finish: a few quiet days after weeks of early starts.
What a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari costs
A three-country trip costs more than a single-country trip, because it adds international and bush flights, three sets of park fees and a gorilla permit. The main drivers are the lodge category, the number of nights, the season, and whether you travel in a private vehicle or a small group. Our own package from-prices for this route are listed in the next section, and the way the pieces add up is explained in our East Africa safari cost guide. For each country on its own, see the Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania cost guides: Uganda safari cost, Kenya safari cost and Tanzania safari cost.
Three costs catch people out: the gorilla permit, which is a fixed fee on top of everything else; the park and conservancy fees, which in the Mara have two seasonal levels; and the Tanzanian insurance introduced in October 2026. We list every one of them in your quote, line by line.
Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari packages
These are our packages that follow the three-country route. Prices are per person, as shown on each package page, and are the lowest starting price. Your quote confirms the exact price for your dates, lodges and group size.
Not sure which length suits you? Tell us your dates and the month you want to travel, and a planner will build the route around you, including the sequence of flights. Packages that add the Seychelles or a longer Zanzibar stay are listed in our multi-country safari guide.
Many guests ask whether Rwanda can be added to this route. It can, and it is worth doing if you want to compare the gorillas of the Virunga volcanoes with those of Bwindi. Adding Rwanda means one more border or flight and a separate gorilla permit, so we plan it as a four-country trip: the 14 day four country safari is the fast version, and the 18 day four country safari gives each country more time.
Who a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari suits, and who should split it
This route suits guests who want the three headline experiences in one trip and who are comfortable with several flights. It suits first-time visitors with 16 days or more, photographers who want variety, and honeymooners or milestone travellers who value the beach finish.
It is less suitable for travellers who dislike packing light, for guests with limited mobility who would struggle with bush airstrips, and for anyone with fewer than 12 days. If that is you, choose two countries and do them well. Families with children should read our guide to the best age for a family safari first, as the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15.
Common mistakes on a three-country safari
Too few nights per stop. One night in the Mara and one in the Serengeti means you spend more time in transit than looking at animals.
Tight connections. A bush flight that leaves two hours after an international arrival is a gamble. Build in a night.
Hard suitcases. Bush airlines accept soft bags only, usually up to 15 kg, so pack accordingly and arrange storage for the rest.
Assuming one visa covers all three. It does not. The East Africa Tourist Visa stops at the Tanzanian border.
Forgetting the insurance. Tanzania's new mandatory cover is separate from your personal policy, which must also cover medical evacuation. See our travel insurance guide.
Treating a river crossing as a promise. It is a possibility. Stay long enough to give it a chance.

Uganda dropped its yellow fever entry certificate on 2 October 2026, but Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania still ask. Journey table, 12 hour transit rule and border outcomes, dated.
Is a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari realistic in two weeks?+
Yes, if you count transit days honestly. Fourteen days is the least we recommend for a first safari: two nights in Bwindi, three in the Maasai Mara and three or four in the Serengeti, plus a short finish. With 16 to 18 days you can add a rest day in Uganda and four or five nights on Zanzibar without rushing.
What is the best order for a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari?+
We recommend Uganda first, then Kenya, then Tanzania. The gorilla trek is the most physical day, so it is best done while you are fresh. Kenya then Tanzania follows the Great Migration in the usual season, and Zanzibar or Arusha comes last so a rest follows the early starts.
When is the best time for a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari?+
Late June to early October is the strongest window: Bwindi is drier, and the herds are in the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, with August and September the peak river-crossing months. Gorillas can be trekked all year. January and February suit a different route built around calving in the southern Serengeti.
Do I need three visas for a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari?+
Most visitors need three permissions: a Uganda e-visa, a Kenya eTA and a Tanzania e-visa. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda but not Tanzania, so you still need a Tanzanian visa. Tanzania also introduced mandatory visitor insurance on 1 October 2026. Always confirm on the official portals.
Is there a direct flight from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti?+
No scheduled direct flight exists. In high season (July to October and mid-December to March) you can fly from the Mara to a border airstrip, cross by road and take a second flight into the Serengeti. At other times the fallback is a flight via Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. Driving across the border takes 8 to 10 hours or more.
How much luggage can I take on a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari?+
Most bush airlines limit you to 15 kg in a soft bag, including hand luggage. Hard suitcases are not accepted on small aircraft. We can store surplus luggage in Entebbe or Nairobi, and you can pre-book extra weight or an extra seat if you carry heavy camera gear.
Can I add Rwanda or Zanzibar to a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari?+
Yes to both. Direct flights connect Entebbe, Kigali, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, so Rwanda's gorillas can replace or follow Uganda's, and Zanzibar makes a natural beach finish. Rwanda adds a second permit price, and the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.
How much does a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari cost?+
Our three-country packages start from $7,450 per person, depending on length, lodges and season. The price is mainly driven by lodge level, the number of nights, whether the vehicle is private and the number of flights. Your quote lists each permit, park fee and flight as a separate line.
Can children join a Uganda Kenya Tanzania safari?+
Children can enjoy the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti, but gorilla trekking has a minimum age of 15. For families with younger children, ask us for a route that replaces the gorilla trek with other experiences.
