detailed Itinerary

Touch down in Nairobi, where the highland air is cool and birdcalls float above the city’s buzz. After a warm welcome and airport transfer, settle into your lodge—perhaps the bird-friendly Macushla House or Hemingways Nairobi, nestled near the indigenous Ngong Hills forest. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy your first bird walk in Karura Forest or around the lodge gardens, where African Paradise Flycatchers, Variable Sunbirds, and Hartlaub’s Turacos are often sighted. Dinner is relaxed, with binoculars at the ready, and your birding journal awaiting its first entries.

Begin your morning at Nairobi National Park, a unique wilderness where lions and rhinos share space with over 500 bird species. Among the acacias and open grasslands, expect to see Secretary Birds, White-backed Vultures, Kori Bustards, and the striking Lilac-breasted Roller. In the wetlands, African Jacanas and Malachite Kingfishers are common. After lunch, visit the Langata Forest Sanctuary, where forest species like the African Goshawk, Green Pigeon, and Black Cuckoo-shrike thrive. Return to Nairobi in the evening for a restful night and checklist review.

Depart early and head north to the slopes of Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and birding gem. Arrive at Serena Mountain Lodge or Castle Forest Lodge, tucked into lush montane forest. This zone is excellent for highland endemics like the Jackson’s Francolin, Scarlet-tufted Sunbird, Hunter’s Cisticola, and the elusive Abyssinian Crimsonwing. Take a guided afternoon walk through the forest trails, where you’ll also find forest mammals and a chorus of birdcalls echoing through the bamboo and fig trees.

Spend the full day birding within the Mount Kenya Forest Reserve. Here, you'll search for montane specials including the Bar-tailed Trogon, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Golden-winged Sunbird, and Mountain Greenbul. The lush landscape also hosts mammals such as bushbuck and Sykes' monkeys. Quiet observation along forested rivers may reward you with sightings of the elusive African Finfoot. In the evening, enjoy a night walk near the lodge grounds, with chances to hear or spot Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and other nocturnal species.

From misty forests, descend into the arid lowlands of Samburu, where a dramatically different birding landscape awaits. Arrive at Samburu Game Lodge or Elephant Bedroom Camp, nestled along the Ewaso Nyiro River. En route and within the reserve, look out for dry-country specials like the Vulturine Guineafowl, Golden-breasted Starling, Somali Bee-eater, and the endemic Williamson’s Lark. Evening birding along the river may yield views of African Palm Swifts and Gabar Goshawks.

Spend the day exploring Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves, twin gems of the semi-arid north. The stark beauty of the landscape hides a wealth of birdlife—expect to encounter the Black-capped Social Weaver, D’Arnaud’s Barbet, Donaldson Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, and the striking Shining Sunbird. Raptors soar over the rugged hills—look for Eastern Chanting Goshawk, Lappet-faced Vulture, and the magnificent Martial Eagle. The open bush and riverine woodlands offer exciting diversity in a single day.

Drive south into the Rift Valley to the tranquil shores of Lake Baringo, one of Kenya’s most famous birding destinations. Check in to Soi Safari Lodge or Tumbili Cliff Lodge, perched near the water’s edge. In the afternoon, take a relaxed boat excursion on the lake, where African Fish Eagles, Cormorants, and Goliath Herons dominate. Scan the papyrus edges for Allen’s Gallinule, White-backed Night Heron, and the occasional Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl at dusk. The chorus of frog calls and bird calls fills the night air.

Rise early for a bird walk with a local ornithologist, exploring nearby cliffs, bushland, and the lake shore. This area is a magnet for birders, boasting over 450 species including Jackson’s Hornbill, Heuglin’s Courser, Spotted Eagle-Owl, and Three-banded Courser. The cliffs may reveal Hemprich’s Hornbill and White-faced Scops-Owl, while the acacia scrub holds Northern Puffback, Brubru, and Red-fronted Warbler. In the evening, enjoy another gentle boat ride or spotlight night birding.

Continue west to Kakamega Forest, Kenya’s last remaining remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest. This rich ecosystem is home to dozens of species found nowhere else in East Africa. Arrive at Rondo Retreat, a charming colonial-era lodge hidden deep in the forest. Begin your exploration with a walk around the lodge grounds, often fruitful with sightings of Great Blue Turacos, Blue-headed Bee-eaters, and Yellow-bellied Wattle-eyes. The sounds of this forest are a symphony of wings and whistles.

Devote your day to birding the enchanting Kakamega Forest, accompanied by local guides who know every call and hiding place. Highlights include the Turner’s Eremomela, Grey Parrot, African Broadbill, Snowy-headed Robin-Chat, and Black-billed Turaco. Keep your eyes and ears open for flocks moving through the canopy, often revealing forest gems like the White-tailed Ant-thrush and Brown Illadopsis. This forest teems not only with birds but also butterflies, primates, and rare flora. Return to Rondo for dinner under towering trees.

Depart early for Lake Nakuru National Park, descending back into the Rift Valley. Check in to Sarova Lion Hill or Flamingo Hill Tented Camp, overlooking the lake. Though flamingo numbers have varied due to changing water levels, the lake still hosts Pelicans, Avocets, and Greater Flamingos. The surrounding woodlands offer Narina Trogon, Levaillant’s Cuckoo, and White-browed Robin-Chat, while the alkaline shorelines attract Marabou Storks, Black-winged Stilts, and plovers. As the sun sets, scan the skies for Bat Hawks and listen for owls near camp.

A short drive takes you to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake known for its acacia-lined shores and rich birdlife. Check in to Naivasha Sopa Lodge or Elsamere Lodge, former home of Joy Adamson. Spend the afternoon on a boat safari, spotting African Jacanas, Grey-headed Gulls, and Giant Kingfishers. Walk on Crescent Island, where birds and mammals co-exist in peace. Species like Grey-backed Fiscal, Black-lored Babbler, and Tawny-flanked Prinia abound. It’s a gentle, scenic finale to your inland birding.

Return to Nairobi in the morning, stopping at birding hotspots en route or simply enjoying the last vistas of the Rift Valley. Upon arrival, visit the Giraffe Centre or Nairobi Arboretum, where Hartlaub’s Turaco and variable sunbirds flourish in the treetops. Alternatively, relax in your lodge garden with a cup of tea and a pair of binoculars, soaking in final sightings of common urban species like African Hoopoe, Speckled Mousebird, and Black-headed Oriole. A farewell dinner closes the day, and your checklist is long and full.

After breakfast, depending on your flight time, enjoy a final walk or visit a birding site nearby. Then transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight. As your plane ascends, carry with you the echoes of hornbills and rollers, the quiet thrill of rarities spotted, and the songs of a land alive with wings. Kenya, a birder’s paradise, will wait patiently for your return.
