detailed Itinerary

Your journey begins in Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital set in the highlands. Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you are transferred to a bird-friendly hotel such as Macushla House or Hemingways Nairobi, where gardens already attract the likes of Bronze Sunbirds and Olive Thrushes. If time allows, you’ll enjoy a light bird walk in Karura Forest, home to Hartlaub’s Turaco, African Paradise Flycatcher, and Crowned Hornbill. The evening is relaxed with a welcome dinner and discussion of the birding expedition ahead.

Begin the day in Nairobi National Park, one of the few national parks within a capital city. Despite its proximity to the city, it boasts over 500 bird species. Scan the grasslands and acacia woodland for Kori Bustards, Secretary Birds, Black-bellied Bustards, and Ostriches. Along the seasonal river and dams, expect African Jacana, Hamerkop, Malachite Kingfisher, and Three-banded Plover. Raptors are also plentiful, including African Harrier-Hawk and Martial Eagle. Return to the hotel in the afternoon and review your growing bird list.

Leave Nairobi after breakfast and head north to the forested foothills of Mount Kenya, arriving at Castle Forest Lodge or Serena Mountain Lodge nestled among bamboo groves. Along the road and lodge grounds, you may spot Tacazze Sunbird, Slender-billed Starling, and Montane White-eye. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided walk through dense forest trails, where chances to see the sought-after Scarlet-tufted Sunbird, Golden-winged Sunbird, and Hartlaub’s Turaco are high. Nightfall may bring calls from African Wood Owls.

Spend a full day exploring the cool montane forests of Mount Kenya National Reserve. Birding here is rich and rewarding, with species such as Bar-tailed Trogon, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, and Yellow-whiskered Greenbul. The area is also excellent for forest-dwelling mammals and butterflies. Watch for flycatcher flocks, and listen for the piping notes of African Hill Babblers. In the evening, relax with warm tea and a checklist session under mist-covered trees.

After breakfast, travel northeast to Samburu National Reserve, where the dry country opens up a whole new world of birds. En route, you may spot roadside raptors like Augur Buzzard and Eastern Chanting Goshawk. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp or Samburu Simba Lodge along the Ewaso Nyiro River. Afternoon birding introduces you to dryland specialists such as Vulturine Guineafowl, Golden-breasted Starling, Donaldson Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, and the Three-streaked Tchagra. Evening is serene with bird calls echoing off the river.

Spend a full day birding in Samburu and Buffalo Springs, sister reserves divided by the river. These semi-arid landscapes are home to over 350 bird species. Highlights include White-headed Mousebird, Somali Bee-eater, Pygmy Falcon, and Black-throated Barbet. The scattered doum palms and scrubby plains also attract specialties like the Rosy-patched Bushshrike and Shining Sunbird. Samburu is also rich in mammals—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and beisa oryx share your lens with raptors like Bateleur and Tawny Eagle.

Journey south toward the Rift Valley and the birding paradise of Lake Baringo. Upon arrival at Soi Safari Lodge or Tumbili Cliff Lodge, take a sunset boat ride to view African Fish Eagles, Cormorants, Goliath Herons, and possibly the elusive Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl. The lake and its surroundings are incredibly productive, with over 470 recorded bird species. Evening birding around the lodge may bring sightings of Heuglin’s Courser and Slender-tailed Nightjar.

Start your day with a guided bird walk, focusing on cliff and acacia habitats. This is one of the best spots in Kenya to see Hemprich’s Hornbill, Northern Masked Weaver, White-browed Coucal, and Brubru. The lake edges are perfect for herons and egrets, and a boat ride may offer sightings of Allen’s Gallinule and African Darter. Optional night walks may turn up Spotted Thick-knee and African Scops Owl.

Drive west to the verdant canopy of Kakamega Forest, a rare outpost of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest in East Africa. Check in at Rondo Retreat, a peaceful haven surrounded by tall trees and flowered gardens. An afternoon walk may yield Great Blue Turaco, Blue-headed Bee-eater, and Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill. The calls of broadbills and bush-shrikes fill the forest as you begin exploring this bird-rich jewel.

With an early start, spend the full day exploring the trails of Kakamega Forest. This unique birding hotspot hosts over 360 species, many of them rare or localized. Key targets include Turner’s Eremomela, Brown Illadopsis, Snowy-headed Robin-Chat, and African Broadbill. Flocks of Chestnut Wattle-eyes and African Shrike-Flycatchers roam the mid-story. In the forest undergrowth, watch for skulkers like the Grey-chested Illadopsis. Every trail holds new surprises in this ecological treasure.

Depart for the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Check in at Ruma River Lodge or Kiboko Bay Resort near Kisumu. Visit nearby swamps and papyrus beds in search of Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, and Carruthers’s Cisticola—species found only in this specialized habitat. The lake's edges attract African Openbill, Black Crake, Long-toed Lapwing, and Pied Kingfisher. Sunset over the lake makes for a peaceful end to the day.

Drive back east into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park, famed for its waterbirds, raptors, and mammals. Settle into Sarova Lion Hill or Flamingo Hill Camp. Flamingo populations have fluctuated in recent years, but the lake still hosts Great White Pelicans, African Spoonbill, and Yellow-billed Stork. Around the wooded edges, spot Grey-crested Helmetshrike, Arrow-marked Babbler, and Narina Trogon. Lake Nakuru is also excellent for large mammals like white rhinos and Rothschild’s giraffes.

A short drive brings you to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake fringed with yellow-barked acacias. Lodges like Lake Naivasha Sopa or Elsamere are perfect for lakeside birding. A peaceful boat ride offers close encounters with African Fish Eagles, Giant Kingfishers, and Malachite Kingfishers. On Crescent Island, walk among herds of giraffes and zebra while spotting birds such as Grey-backed Fiscal, Common Waxbill, and Spectacled Weaver. Naivasha provides a more intimate birding experience in a stunning setting.

Visit Hell’s Gate National Park, where dramatic gorges and rock formations host Verreaux’s Eagles, Rock Martins, and Schalow’s Wheatears. Continue to Kinangop Plateau, a high-altitude grassland home to the endangered Sharpe’s Longclaw. The open fields and wetlands also attract Long-tailed Widowbird, Wing-snapping Cisticola, and Denham’s Bustard. Return to Naivasha for a restful evening.

Travel south to Amboseli National Park, famous for its elephant herds and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Check in at Ol Tukai Lodge or Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. Bird the swampy areas for Long-toed Lapwing, African Swamphen, and Greater Painted-snipe. The drier plains support Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, and White-backed Vultures. With Kilimanjaro as your backdrop, Amboseli offers some of the most photogenic birding in Kenya.

Spend the day exploring Amboseli’s mix of acacia woodlands, open plains, and wetland springs. Spot Lesser Flamingo, Black-winged Stilt, and African Marsh Harrier. The clear skies often reveal raptors such as Steppe Eagle, Black-chested Snake Eagle, and Lanner Falcon. Evening birding around the lodge often yields African Scops Owl and Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl.

Return to Nairobi, stopping for birding en route along seasonal wetlands. Back in the city, visit Nairobi Arboretum or Langata Forest Sanctuary for final species such as the African Goshawk, White-browed Robin-Chat, and Speckled Mousebird. It’s a day to unwind and reflect on the extraordinary diversity you’ve seen—over 600 species likely recorded.

After breakfast, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home. The rhythm of wings, the dawn songs, and the colors of Kenya’s skies go with you. Your binoculars may rest, but the echo of this journey stays alive—etched in memory, forever calling you back.
