Overview

A dedicated 10-day pursuit of the Great Migration entirely within Tanzania, from calving grounds to river crossings.

The Great Migration is not one event — it's a continuous, circular movement of roughly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, and no single day or location can show you all of it. This 10-day Tanzania Grand Migration Explorer is built specifically to solve that problem, positioning you at three distinct locations, each timed to a different phase of the herds' annual cycle: Ndutu and the southern short-grass plains for the calving season, Central Serengeti's Seronera Valley for resident big cats and the approach routes the herds funnel through, and the northern Serengeti's Mara River for the year's most dramatic crossings. Designed for photographers and dedicated wildlife enthusiasts who want more than a glimpse, this itinerary stays entirely within Tanzania, trading border logistics for maximum time in the field with specialist guides who track the herds for a living.

Because no single trip window captures every migration phase at full intensity, we run this exact route on three signature seasonal departures. Book for late December through March and Ndutu's southern plains deliver the calving season proper — roughly 8,000 wildebeest calves born daily at the peak, drawing the densest predator concentrations found anywhere in the ecosystem. Book for late June through September and the northern Mara River becomes the focus, with wildebeest columns funneling down steep banks into water where Nile crocodiles have waited, sometimes for days, without feeding. Central Serengeti's resident cats hold steady across both windows. Camps along this route carry limited inventory during peak season — we'd recommend confirming your preferred departure well in advance.

Which of the three areas you spend most time in depends on your dates. On calving departures (late December to March) the herds are on the southern plains around Ndutu; on crossing departures (late June to September) they are in the north around Kogatende and the Mara River. We confirm the camps and the order of the three areas for your dates in your written proposal.

Your 10-day journey

Day 1

Arrive & Fly to Ndutu, Southern Serengeti

A short scheduled flight from Kilimanjaro or Arusha carries you directly into the Ndutu region, on the southeastern edge of the Serengeti ecosystem within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is deliberately the itinerary's first stop for travelers on a calving-season departure — the area's mineral-rich volcanic soils produce the short, nutrient-dense grass that draws the migration's main herds here between roughly December and March, specifically to give birth. Landing on Ndutu's dirt airstrip, an afternoon game drive introduces the region's flat, big-sky plains and the acacia woodland fringing Lakes Ndutu and Masek, with an excellent early chance at spotted hyena clans and resident cheetah already positioning themselves near grazing wildebeest.

Day 2

Ndutu Calving Grounds

A full day immersed in the calving grounds proper, where synchronized birthing (roughly eighty percent of calves are born within a two-to-three-week peak window) floods the plains with vulnerable newborns and, in turn, the highest concentration of predator activity found anywhere in the migration's annual circuit. Lion prides, cheetah and both spotted and striped hyena position themselves methodically around the nursery herds, and it is genuinely common here — more than almost anywhere else on the route — to witness a hunt play out in real time. Newborn wildebeest calves stand and can outrun a human within minutes of birth, a startling adaptation to exactly this pressure. Your guide reads herd density and recent predator movement each morning to position you accordingly.

Day 3

Lake Ndutu Woodland & Maasai Encounter

Today shifts pace slightly, exploring the acacia woodland fringing Lake Ndutu, where elephant, giraffe and a strong resident leopard population favor the denser cover over the open plains. A late-morning stop at a nearby Maasai community offers a genuine, non-staged look at pastoral life alongside the same land the migration crosses each year — a useful counterpoint to the wildlife-first pace of the previous two days. Your afternoon game drive returns to open ground, tracking whichever cheetah or hyena clan your guide has been following, before a final Ndutu sundowner over the shimmering, often pink-tinged soda flats of the lake itself, a striking contrast to the green plains inland.

Day 4

Transfer to Central Serengeti, Seronera Valley

A scenic drive north carries you deeper into the Serengeti, out of Ndutu's seasonal short-grass plains and into the Seronera Valley — the ecosystem's permanent-water heartland and, unlike Ndutu, a year-round predator stronghold regardless of where the wider migration currently sits. This is also where the migration's northward and southward approach routes converge, and your guide will brief you daily on the herds' current position relative to the valley. Granite kopjes rising from the grassland here serve as natural denning sites and vantage points for resident lion prides and leopards, decades-studied by long-running research projects based nearby. Your afternoon game drive makes the most of this reliability, with a strong first-day chance at both species.

Day 5

Seronera Big-Cat Tracking

A full day dedicated to Seronera's resident predators, worked with the benefit of your guide's ongoing local knowledge of specific pride territories and known leopard trees. Photographers are given priority positioning and patient waiting time at active sightings rather than a rushed circuit — the valley's open sightlines particularly suit cheetah, whose hunts across the shorter grass here are genuinely trackable from a considerable distance. Depending on the calendar, your guide layers in an update each morning on the wider migration's position, since the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem's movement is a continuous, circular process rather than a single seasonal event, and Seronera itself sits directly on the herds' transitional corridor between south and north.

Day 6

Retina Hippo Pool & Photographic Vantage Points

Today explores beyond the valley's core, with a visit to the Retina Hippo Pool, where dense pods wallow through the heat of the day and Nile crocodile bask along the banks — a reliably active, close-range sighting regardless of season. The surrounding riverine forest supports species less common on the open plains, including vervet monkey troops and a strong population of African fish eagles. Your guide uses the remainder of the day to revisit any pride or individual cat that made a particular impression earlier in the stay, working known territories at the golden-hour light photographers favor most, before a final Central Serengeti sundowner ahead of tomorrow's transfer north.

Day 7

Fly to Kogatende, Northern Serengeti

A short flight north carries you into the Kogatende sector, the Serengeti's remote northern frontier and, on a late-June-through-September departure, the itinerary's primary focus — this is where the Mara River crossings, the single most dramatic set-piece in African wildlife, actually happen. Landing on the region's dirt airstrip, an afternoon game drive introduces the rockier, more rugged terrain of the north, dominated by the granite kopje your lodge is built directly into, with sweeping views down onto the Mara River itself. Your guide's briefing covers current herd position and river conditions, since crossing points shift day to day depending on where the lead animals have gathered courage to commit.

Day 8

Mara River Crossing Pursuit

A full day dedicated to the Mara River's crossing points, where — during the late June to September window — up to a million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra funnel down steep banks under pressure from herd momentum behind them, hesitate, and then commit en masse into water where Nile crocodiles have waited, often for days, without feeding. Your guide works a real-time network of spotter vehicles to position you at the most active point given that morning's herd movement; patience is genuinely part of the experience, since a crossing can happen within minutes of arriving or after several hours of tense, quiet waiting. Between attempts, the surrounding plains hold resident lion prides and some of the Mara ecosystem's largest recorded elephant bulls.

Day 9

Mara Triangle Vantage & Final Photography

Your final full day works the wider Kogatende and Mara Triangle terrain beyond the primary crossing points, tracking resident predators and any herds still consolidating along the riverbank with less pressure from other vehicles. Elevated granite vantage points near your lodge offer a genuinely different photographic angle on the river below — wide, landscape-scale frames of the herds moving through open country rather than close crossing action. Your guide uses the day's remaining light to revisit any standout sighting from the previous eight days, and a final northern Serengeti sundowner overlooking the river closes out a trip built entirely around this one extraordinary, continuous movement of animals.

Day 10

Departure

A relaxed final morning at your riverside lodge — a last game drive if timing allows, or simply breakfast on the deck overlooking the Mara River — precedes your scheduled flight back to Kilimanjaro or Arusha for your onward or homeward connection. Our local team remains available throughout this final transfer, and we're always glad to help returning migration enthusiasts plan their next seasonal departure.
